Competition rules
Can you use it in your division?
A technique name alone does not settle legality. Check the entry, the resulting leg configuration, and the submission separately.
Start with your event and division
Age, belt or experience level, and gi versus no-gi can change the answer even within the same organization. Identify your event and division, then read the rules it actually adopts. Permission to enter the legs does not automatically permit a heel-hook finish.
IBJJF: distinguish the 2021 change from the rulebook
IBJJF announced heel-hook and knee-reaping changes for adult brown- and black-belt no-gi divisions effective January 1, 2021. This is the historical change notice.
The reference edition is IBJJF Rule Book v6.1 (2024). Its prohibited-techniques table on page 29 prohibits heel hooks and knee reaping in the other listed categories, and scissor takedowns across all listed categories. Use the official documents to check your own event.
ADCC Opens: use the division-specific chart
The official ADCC Opens entry page linked to the chart dated July 20, 2026 when reviewed on October 19, 2026. The table below reproduces the two relevant rows across divisions. Do not automatically apply an Opens chart to the world championships or another event.
The scissor-takedown row concerns techniques such as kani basami. It does not establish that an Imanari roll and a scissor takedown are the same technique.
| Division | Heel hooks | Scissor takedowns |
|---|---|---|
| Adults · Beginner / Intermediate | Allowed | Prohibited |
| Adults · Advanced | Allowed | Allowed |
| Masters · Beginner / Intermediate | Prohibited | Prohibited |
| Masters · Advanced | Allowed | Prohibited |
| Kids / Teens · all listed levels | Prohibited | Prohibited |
Four separate questions
Is the entry movement restricted? Does the resulting leg position constitute knee reaping? Is the finishing submission permitted in your division? What scoring or penalty consequences apply?
These notes identify what to check. They do not replace the event organizer's rules or a referee's assessment of a particular movement.
